This article explores Netflix’s operational mechanisms through the conceptual lens of Félix Guattari’s “abstract machine”. It does so by identifying and analysing the various disruptions within Netflix’s complex socio-technical system – such as marginalisations, breaches, and fissures – that compromise its computational transparency. The externality and heterogeneity that bind the various components of the Netflix-machine (users’ bodies, devices, algorithms, cables, cloud, aesthetic values) produce a kind of irreparable noise that functions as a bug within the platform. By investigating these assemblages, the article also aims to shed light on the underlying Netflix’s ‘rhythmological character’. It argues that these disruptions drive the platform’s expansive capabilities and open it to increasingly complex, fluid, and precarious assemblages. Through this analysis, this work ultimately contributes to discussions on technological and social individuation, offering fresh insights into how technology and culture intertwine within an environment dominated by algorithmic logic.
